The right time to lose weight

Hello lovely ladies, welcome to the podcast.

I'm so excited for them because this is the most powerful work that we'll ever do. And just thinking about that makes me feel so pumped. So I am pumped and I'm recording this episode for you because it is a question that I get asked so often, so I wanted to address it on this podcast.

So the question is when is the perfect time to lose? I'm gonna just answer it directly and then explain my reasoning. Okay. So there is no perfect time to lose weight. It's just the time you decide to make it work. Now, as you know, your brain is wired to seek pleasure, avoid pain and stay the. . So when you are thinking about making a decision, your brain is wired to do what you have always done.

It is wired to stay the same. So even if there's a part of you that actually wants to do something, there's a part of you that really wants to lose weight and keep it off for good. Your brain is actually wired to keep you doing what you've always done. It's wired to tell you, you just need to figure it out yourself.

It's wired to tell you that you just need to have a little bit more willpower. It's wired to tell you that you already know what to do. You're just not doing it because all of these things keep you doing what you've always done. They keep you from trying the new thing that you know is gonna help you, but feels uncomfortable for you to make that decision.

Right? So this is why I always say whenever you are trying to make a decision, it's important to take action. Now it's important to say yes, I want to do it and then figure it out. Figure out exactly how you're going to do it. because when you make that decision, then your brain is now on board. Your brain is now even, though it may be freaking out, it is wanting to be efficient.

Right? One of the three things in the motivational triad is seek pleasure, avoid pain and stay how you are, but the stay, how you are bit is so that it can conserve energy. So it can be efficient at what it's doing. So when you have made a decision that, yes, I want to lose weight. Your brain is just trying to be efficient.

It wants to help you. It wants to serve you. So it's easier to get started on this new thing and actually figure out how you're gonna make it work for you than keep telling you that you made the wrong decision, because that actually consumes too much energy for the brain. So a lot of people ask me, how do you get so much done in your life?

How are you so successful? and the reason I am so successful in so many areas of my life is because I make a difficult decision and I commit to doing it before I feel that I'm ready. So one of my coach colleagues, Olivia Vizachero, she often talks about the phrase "gag and go"

So she often says it when it's about thinking of doing something uncomfortable and just doing it anyway. So you just gag and go. So you, you are, you're gonna feel uncomfortable, but you just go and do it anyway. And I love this so much, especially in this example of deciding to lose weight and just going and doing it.

what it helps you do is anticipate that yes, that it is gonna be uncomfortable, but I'm gonna do it anyway. you go in with the mindset of, you know what? I know that I'm gonna figure this out and because the truth is you are never going to be ready for anything you just decide. I was not ready to be a doctor.

I had so much doubt, right? My brain was actually telling me, no, I'm not good enough. It will be too hard. I shouldn't do it, but I decided to do it anyway. My brain said you shouldn't apply to the best foundation training school in the country because you won't get in. And then you won't want to feel all of those, feelings of rejection and shame.

But you know what? I did it anyway. My brain told me I wasn't ready to get married. that I needed to be at a certain place in my life, in my career before I could get married. And you know what? I decided, no, I wanted to do it anyway. I wasn't ready to have a child. I mean, so many people say, say that to me.

Um, I'm not ready to have a child, but what does that even mean? You're never gonna be ready to do anything until you do it. So it's a misconception that you actually need to be ready for. So, you're never gonna be ready until you decide to do it because the way your brain is wired, it wants to keep you safe.

It wants to keep you doing the same things that you've always done, because those same things that you've always done have always kept you safe because see you're alive right now. So your brain thinks if I keep doing What I always have done, then I will be safe and doing anything new is going to threaten my survival.

So it will always offer you resistance to doing anything new, always. So I want you to expect that anytime you're making a decision, so I was not ready to train as a coach because I thought, no, no, one's going to want to get coaching from me. I'm so proud of that past self of mine who just said, you know what?

No, I'm just gonna decide to do it. and then I'll figure it out. And you know what? I figured it out. I've got thousands of you who are listening to me every single day. I've got hundreds of you who I've coached. And it's just the most phenomenal feeling, looking back and thinking I'm so proud of that past self with me, who decided to believe in myself and do it anyway.

And then she figured it out. So this is the same thing for you, right? when you are looking back, you're gonna thank this past self of you who decided to make that decision to commit to yourself and then figured it out. The same thing here. I wasn't ready to give up my medical practice and you know what I said to myself, I'm going to do it and I'm gonna make it work.

Now, this comes up for so many of my clients as well, especially in the weight loss. I will, join your program when my schedule at work is calmer, but the problem is, is that what then your brain is relying on is to have a calm schedule, to lose weight. And the honest truth is that your schedule is never likely to be calmer because when you are not addressing the thoughts that are leading to you, taking the action of packing your schedule, then you are never gonna be able to change.

So, if you are waiting on your schedule to be lighter or calmer for you to actually take action, then you are gonna always be relying on that. And the truth is you'll always just keep packing your schedule, cuz you've not dealt with the underlying reason why your schedule is so packed in the first place.

Now I know so many of you are gonna be shouting out. No, but it's not me. It's work. Work is so busy. what I want to show you is that yes, it, it may be busy, but the way you are thinking about it is making it so much worse for you than just doing it and just getting it done, or by just saying to your boss, actually, these are the only things that I can do and actually standing up for yourself.

So yes, there are gonna be circumstances in your life that you can't control, but the things that you can control, which are your thinking, your feeling, your actions and your results. That is what we focus on in the group coaching program. right. So going back to having a lighter schedule and then joining, then your schedule will never be calmer.

Or even if it is, it will be a long time away. So are you willing to wait on feeling better right now because of that schedule of yours, figuring out how to make it work now is actually part of your transf. when you figure out how to make it work for you now, then when you are on your weight loss journey, there's gonna be loads of things to figure out.

So you are already gonna be in the mindset of, you know what? I figured that out. I'm gonna just figure this out. And actually the weight loss journey is just you figuring out different bits, different obstacles and solving for them at every stage of your journey. Right? So another thing that comes up for a lot of my clients, I need to save up the money for.

now a lot of you already have the money sitting in your account or have access to it pretty easily, but the problem isn't the money. The problem is feeling the ability to spend that amount of money on yourself. Actually allowing yourself to think of yourself as important enough to spend that money on.

by making a conscious decision that, yes, I am doing this for me because this is really important to me. And actually I do what I say I'm going to do now. A lot of my clients say, yeah, you know what, I'm gonna save that money. And then I'll join now. For you, if you know that that is you, that you will actually follow through with your word and actually do that.

That's completely fine. I am here for you whenever you decide, but there's a lot of you who say that, but then won't follow through with it. And it's because other things will keep coming up. And when you keep putting other things before your own health, so your own mental and physical health, which is what we work on in the group coaching program, then you don't learn the skills to prioritize your health now because you keep teaching your brain that you'll do it when your circumstances change.

So you keep relying on things outside of you to change for you to feel better for you to actually take the action that you really want to take. You keep telling your brain. You can only lose weight when you have the money and when you have the time, but this is just not true. You want to learn how to lose weight when things are busy in your life, when you are gonna be figuring things out, because when things are going on in your life, when you actually do have the holidays planned, when you do have loads of social gatherings, that's when you want to.

learn how to lose weight, right? Because that's real life, but most people think, oh, I don't wanna do it now because then I'll feel deprived. And I won't be able to eat at social gatherings. And I won't be able to, you know, enjoy myself on holiday, but this is just not true because you want to lose weight in a way that fits in with your life.

Not just lose weight when things are calm in your life, because when things do get chaotic, If you are not losing weight in a way that is fitting in with your life, then you won't know how to manage it when things get chaotic in your life. So you'd rather learn how to lose weight in your current life, now, when things are going on, when things are chaotic, because then you learn how to manage your emotions through the manic and chaotic time, and you train your brain to be able to actually manage.

And actually, as you know, in the group coaching program, we work mainly on mind management. So the mind management tools that you're using in your weight loss journey are gonna be the exact same tools that you're gonna able to use to manage everything else that's going on in your life, which is why we coach on all these things, right.

We coach on management because when people learn how to manage their time, it's easier for them to manage their food. We coach on relationships because the reason why most people over eat is because they feel. They are not having a good relationship with themselves, firstly, but also in other areas of their life.

And so they rely on food to make themselves feel better. We coach on their relationship with themselves and their confidence because when they're being so critical and, judgmental of themselves, then they are gonna be relying on food to make themselves feel better. We coach on actually how to.

Make time for themselves because when they think that they're not good enough and that they don't actually deserve that time and that they need to people please others to make them feel better, then they're gonna rely on food to make it better. So can you see all of these other things do affect your life?

And so that's why we coaching all these things in the group coaching program. So when we are, coaching all on all of these things, your whole life will improve. It's not just the weight loss aspect. Right. And also you learn how to. Incorporate the weight loss into your normal life and weight loss just becomes the norm.

It doesn't need to be an added thing on your to-do list. It's just incorporated into your life. It just becomes you. And so then by the end, you are just a person who. weight loss is just, normal for you. It's not even like a big deal. And I know a lot of you come in thinking, oh my gosh, I'm gonna, it's gonna feel so amazing when I've lost all the weight.

Let me tell you when you actually get there, because you've been living into that person who just loses weight with no problem and just maintains her weight with no problem. Then when you actually get there, because you've been living into her for so long, it doesn't actually feel that different.

And it, and it's just so fun to know that, because then it is just who you are and your self concept of yourself has changed so that you are just a person who maintains your weight. That's where we get to. So I'm gonna give you an example of a few of my clients who have gone through some of these things.

one of my examples is a client who was having the busiest time of her life. She was planning her daughter's wedding. It was understaffed at work, and she was doing the job of three people. She was doing an additional diploma in her free time, which took up most of her free time, but she still decided that this was the time that she wanted to lose.

she'd been reading my posts and reading my emails and she just resonated with what I was saying. And she saw that I'd done it myself lost 42 kilograms. And she knew that I was the coach to help her. So despite everything going on in her life, she decided to come to every coaching call. she decided to, despite her calendar being so packed, she decided to make it work for her.

Despite her spending so much money on her daughter's wedding. She, decided to allocate that money to this and make it work for her. And you know what? She achieved tremendous results because she was able to make it work for her. Even when her brain was telling her this wasn't the right. by the end, she was calmer at work.

She was able to prioritize her time to finish her diploma because that's what she wanted to do most. And she lost the most amount of weight and has kept it off. This is how you want to lose weight. The way I teach weight loss is that it fits in with your life. It doesn't take over your life. Right.

another example is one of my clients. She was a busy mom of three boys and she was pregnant with her fourth child. She was a doctor working in a busy hospital trust and she decided that she wanted to start coaching while she was pregnant so that I could help her manage her mind at work. And so that she could start doing the mind management.

To help her lose weight when she was ready to start doing that. And so we were able to help her manage her stress at work and start doing the planning and the evaluating before she even started losing weight. So that when she had actually given birth, she knew that she was gonna breastfeed her baby. So we created a plan for her, where she was able to eat in a way where her milk supply was, completely amazing.

And she was able to lose the. so she lost nearly 30 kilograms in a year, and she's been able to keep it off whilst going back to work as a doctor and being the mom of four whilst living a really busy life. So the person who she became by the end of it was someone who was able to manage that busy life and manage her emotions with regards to that who was able to make that time out for herself.

Even when she had a busy life, she was a doctor, she was, a mom of four. She had so many other things going on, but because of her losing weight, when all of this other stuff was going on in her life, because of her making that time out for herself, Allocating that money for herself and just committing that time and energy, she was able to keep that off for life.

And now she gets to reap the benefits for the rest of her life, because she has learnt those tools. Now that doesn't mean that she will never struggle with her weight again, of course she may, but that is not the point. She has been able to do it in a time of her life where it was really quite stressful and hard for her.

So because of that, she's able to go back to the tools at any time and just reapply them because she knows them. Now, another example is one of my clients who decided that this was important to her to get coached. So she put off renovating her house so she could do the mind management. she had the money in her account, but she had allocated it to something else initially, right.

Because of course she didn't know what impact coaching would have on her. She didn't know how much better she'd feel after coaching and during the coaching relationship, she was able to lose the weight while losing all the mental weight that she'd been carrying in her mind for so many. and she was able to work on how she treated herself.

She had a very self critical relationship with herself because of a lot of past relationship trauma. And her image of herself was actually the thing that we really worked on. So we worked on herself worth and her thoughts about herself, and we helped her manage her mind when her brain wanted to criticise herself.

And she built up the courage to start dating again. now she's engaged her dream man who treats her, how she could never even have dreamed of. And now she is marrying him. So not only did she lose weight, but she dealt with the things in her life that were actually holding her back. And was able to create the life that she had only ever dreamt of.

Right now I could keep going on and on and on . But as you can see the act of making a decision to start losing. , it was difficult for all of these clients of mine, but they decided to do it anyway because when you make that decision, yes, you are going against your brain's functioning, but then your brain is on your side.
